Today in class each group was assigned a population for which their garden should cater to. Our group is working with adults on the DASH diet. The "DASH diet plan which was developed by the US National Institutes of Health to lower blood pressure" (1). The DASH diet is high in fruits and vegetables. The vegetables we chose to grow in our garden are summer squash, spinach, carrots, zucchini, and green beans. These are vegetables that have potassium, calcium, and magnesium. I am excited to get started and am already thinking of recipes that utilize these veggies for our brunch!
Secondly, we were assigned an agency for our agency assignment - I am working on the first lady's "Let's Move!" campaign. It combines healthy eating and exercise in an attempt to help fight childhood obesity. I am interested to learn more about this program and apply my exercise physiology background as well as what I have learned through my nutrition classes.
