Tuesday April 3, 2012

Today was our first day at the Athens Community Garden. Though a little overcast, the weather held and it was a great day for gardening. Meghan Lundsford, the Interim Fitness Coordinator at WellWorks, was our tour guide. She showed us where and how to get water, and where the gardening tools were kept. Then she showed us our plot - it was very weedy. We split the plot into quadrants, one for each group, and in no time we had our soil turned over and roughly weeded. In the process we found left-over carrots and potatoes from gardens in previous years. I am excited to watch the garden grow and learn new techniques from other gardeners. I also thought it was very interesting that the plots only cost $25 for the entire summer; if able to grow a successful garden it can reduce food costs by a lot and provide a family with fresh produce.
