Tuesday May 1, 2012

This Tuesday, Janine Faber  from Meijer came to speak to the class.  Meijer is a superstore comparable to Walmart super centers. Her role at Meijer is one of the regional directors for the healthy living team; she is in charge of the Columbus, Cincinnati and Lexington ares. The role of the healthy team at Meijer is to organize community events such as health fairs, expos and cooking demos. They also do in-store events and appear in the media.

She gave us many handouts ranging from monthly booklets (one was asparagus themed - may favorite veggie!) to tips and tricks to cooking fish. The ultimate goal of Janine and the healthy living team is to help people lead healthier lives. Unfortunately, I am not from an area with the Meijer chain and will be unable to use the coupons she provided.

She also talked about Meijer's NuVal system, which I thought was very interesting. It is an easy way to quantify the benefit provided by certain foods and helps people identify which foods they should be eating. However, I feel that one weakness it may have is that it may direct people to more processed options that use artificial sweeteners etc to make them fat or sugar free. I am a big supporter of whole foods; if you're going to eat something full of fat or sugar, choose something with the least amount of preservatives and processing, just do so in moderation.

It all comes back to portion control and self monitoring.
