Most Americans are unaware of the impoverished that are living within their community. In 2003, 60 Minutes reported a special called "The Line", a short documentary in which "Scott Pelley reported from food lines in Ohio and found many were the working poor who found it ever more difficult to make ends meet" (1). The video is both an enlightening and upsetting view of the working poor in America. Families that are working full-time jobs, and yet cannot seem to make ends meet enough to feed themselves. Children whose only meal comes in the form of school lunch.

For community nutritionists, this is exactly the type of situation we are fighting against. Organizations and programs such as WIC, CACFP, and TEFAP are available in high risk communities in order to help these families meet their nutritional needs.

I am excited to learn more about community nutrition and inspired to help people in their time of need.
